July 30 - Goofy

"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect."

~ Anaïs Nin

The first post on this blog went up in 2016.  I've taken a few detours since then, but the odometer just recently rolled past 1400 posts.

That's enough balloons that I probably shouldn't feel guilty about the occasional "oh wow, I forgot about this one!"  Some of this blog predates posting on Instagram, while others were simply overshadowed by shinier/sillier things.

So I'm going to use Thursdays to take a walk through the archives.  I have a feeling there's a name for this kind of thing...

Thinkback Thursdays?

Close enough.

Really I just wanted to crack open this box here labelled "Good Stuff I Almost Forgot About".

This was the second post on the blog, the first one that felt intentional.  And my Disney avatar.

October 22 - Goofy

"Gawrsh!"

~ Goofy

Apparently the invitation said "come in costume," but the ink smudged.

He read "come in cartoon."

Steamboat Goofy.

January 18 - Loopy Dogz

"Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and being goofy is forever."

~ Walt Disney

Goofy is a dog - I know it's fun to wax philosophically "why can't Pluto talk?", but his first appearance was as a character called Dippy Dawg.

Pluto can actually talk, but he doesn’t out of respect.  Speaking is a right firmly reserved for the established Alpha - and gawrsh that smile hides quite a bite.

The head color was looking a little like Underdog in the first build, but I liked the "goofy" scared look the ears give.

November 20 - Chibicoro Disney

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.

~ Walt Disney

Chibicoro balloons are a balloon concept I stumbled across last year in a hunt for balloon art. (link)

But what is a Chibicoro? The word "Chibi" roughly translates to "short" in size. From the website, using google-translate I've learned that the design is intentionally small and simple, easy to build and perfect for the decoration of a gift or a greeting.

This is the first "free" balloon concept that I've used this year, the Chibicoro site (link) demonstrates how to create the basic forms and gives a LOT of examples.  Because this is available freely, I am happy to share the specific elements that I used to create my versions of the designs as I try to explore the concept further.

This time I've explored a few Disney characters - the "Big 3"; Mickey, Goofy and Donald.

First built was Mickey to refresh my memory and using the design they demonstrated in their archive (link).   Then I attempted Donald and finally the Goofy.  Goofy is a bit of a cheat on the form by adding the shoes, but he's such a tall character to begin with and I really like the way they ended up. In fact that one works well standing on it's own.

June 30 - Loopy Goofy

“I've found that child's play -stuff that was not considered serious, but goofy- was the stuff I liked to do, so I still do it as an adult.”

~ Matt Groening

This Goofy is another freestyle use of Tony Twist's Loop the Loop concept.

Goofy is my favorite of the Disney "Big Three", and I thought I would give him a try using this style.  I think it worked fairly well, but I built it all from memory and now that I look at the pictures I realize I forgot his vest and white gloves.

I sometimes waffle between taking pictures using my photo box and taking them outside, but I really only have one option when it's a bigger model.  There is more control in the photo box, but I tend to have more fun trying to set up some sort of scene outside.  When I put head to the side, I got the idea that would pose him on a surf board.

April 12 - Goofy

Gawrsh!

~ Goofy

Goofy is my favorite character from the "Big 3" -- and I thought to make him with Patrick Van de Ven's 'Little Guy' technique. There are a number of places I had to cheat to get it done though, and in the end, Goofy's snout area is much more pronounced and longer than this balloon concept allows for. Still, when I gave this away it was instantly recognizable.

... though I should have added his hat ...

From a Disney Wiki:
His original concept name was "Dippy Dawg" in cartoon shorts created during the 1930s; then his name was given as "George Geef" or "G.G. Geef" in cartoon shorts during the 1950's, implying that "Goofy" was a nickname. Contemporary sources, including the Goof Troop television show and A Goofy Movie, now give the character's full name to be Goofy Goof. The Goof Troop pilot also refers to 'G. G. Goof' on a diploma, likely a reference to the 1950's name.

January 2 - Goofy

Gowrsh!

Goofy has always been one of my favorite of the Fab Four.  This balloon takes inspiration from Dylan Gylen...Gyleni... Dylan from Slightly Twisted Balloons.  His Mickey and Cheshire Cats are simply amazing, my goal was to attempt to match the quality of his Sorcerers Apprenticr.  (As always, my NEXT one will be better!)
