June 1 - Awards Banquet

The potential for greatness lives within each of us.

~ Wilma Rudolph - Olympic Gold Medalist (Rome 1960)

Yesterday was our school's awards banquet.

This is the first time it was held in the new school gym and since there's no stage area, they wanted something to not only draw focus to where the kids would be lining up to receive their awards, but also create somewhat of a more exciting entry, so you knew you were headed to a celebration.

I am still a bit of a hack when it comes to decor, this is the third arch I've ever built, and probably the 6th column.  I really should invest in some training, I don't know much else to do besides mix up the colors and decorate with twisted elements.  Knowing other combinations of size and styles would make it more interesting.

We are the "Miners" and I've been playing with a few ideas making a school mascot.  Patrick Van de Ven's little guys concept worked perfect for creating these miner/sports folks, one for each of the sports being represented in the banquet - but 2 basketball players because the girls team wore a different outfit.  The idea for the columns was to have two larger sized miners atop holding the "GO MINERS" helium balloons, but that idea fell through the cracks of time (or lack of time really) so I went with plain toppers.  My first time working with helium balloons!

GO MINERS!
